Week 3, thing 7

As usual, I am getting way behind but will work hard to catch up.

It appears to me lately that my working life, at least, is being pushed by technology.  While I am not kicking and screaming to get away I never feel like I am leading the way and always feel a few steps behind.  Currently, here in Norwich we are working with the free source circulation software Koha and are part of the Consortium which has formed to pursue this. What this has shown me is how little I know about how things really work. I feel like I can learn the procedures to do what I want to do but don’t really understand the mechanisms that lie underneath. This can be frustrating. I can understand the most complex biological concepts but not the fairly simple Computer ones. Perhaps I need to start thinking about the computer as an organic life form!

Now on to RSS!

Week 3, thing 6–Flickr fun

I think I spent waaayyy too much time playing. It is easy to get sucked into looking at this that and more of this and that. Ultimately I started work on a trading card and a calendar through bighugelabs. This may ultimately have some practical purpose to us at the library. We have talked before about creating a calendar ala “The Men of Maple Corners”–but not so nude (does anyone remember this?).

As you can see I also spelled out scarlet begonias thru spell with flickr.

I can see that there would be many, many fun and useful things we could do…..hmmm, our library signs could use some spicing up too.

Week 3, thing 5–Flickr

Although it seemed to be quite a rigmarole to get it set up– in the end I guess it worked and there’s the picture on the blog! While I can ultimately figure out all the steps it still always strikes me as really beyond my comprehension. All things happening in Cyberspace are magic!

I am also struck once again by how many username/passwords there are to remember. Once I got to flickr I realized that I already had a yahoo account with a very different user name than the one for the blog. I was reading Dave Barry recently and he said that very little space in the brain is reserved for relatively important info like usernames, social security #s, your mother’s birthday etc and relatively much for the lyrics and tunes of very bad songs we know from our youth. I think this is true.

I am glad to understand essentially how to work it but I not yet sure how much I woould use Flickr.

Okay….on to the next thing>>>>>

Week 2, Thing 3–Register your blog

I think I did it……I am trying to figure out how to change the line that says “just another WordPress.com weblog….and some other things too…..

Week 2, Thing 3–Set up your own blog

Okay, okay….. I know it’s not really week 2……more like week 4. Honestly, I did start week one on week one but a combination of snow/ice, work and my general tendency to procrastinate is forcing me to do this today. My procrastination is in no way related to the fact that I think this is a great program and idea and I have been intermittently reading other people’s blogs–which are all great in many different ways.

It is not obvious from my username, I know (it matched my google account), but I am the assistant librarian in Norwich. I love technology but the more I try this stuff the more incompetent I feel. My 16 year old son thinks it’s a great idea especially to introduce old people like his mother to the things that are intuitive and second nature to him and that he thinks are critical to living life in the 21st century. (although he doesn’t blog–too narcissistic!)

Look forward to customizing the appearance of this blog, once I figure out a little more about what I’m doing….but here goes post #1!!!!
